This morning we woke up to a voice on the intercom announcing that they were sorry the building didn’t have heating. The pipes were frozen. A plumber had been called, but there was nothing he could do.
We all but flew out of bed and rushed to the bathroom to check if there was hot water. If the heating didn’t work, then maybe the boiler didn’t either. Nope, no hot water and so the shower we had looked forward to wasn’t going to happen. The water was only lukewarm.
Dieter announced that he was going to brave it and shower anyway. Less than a minute later he was back, he was brave, but not brave enough.
Nothing could stop me though. I hadn’t showered in three days, hadn’t washed my hair in five days, so hot water or no hot water, I was doing to wash.
I filled three pots with water and heated them on the stove. Then I took the pots to the bathroom and washed my hair the old fashioned way … mixing the hot water with cold water and pouring water over my head.
I let the water stand in the bath and then climbed in to wash. It wasn’t warm, it was only lukewarm, but when the going gets tough the tough get going.
Now we’re holed up in Dieter’s room with a heater. Even on full blast the heater doesn’t make a difference in the living room, but it does make a small room nice and warm.
The down point is … if we have to leave the room, we feel the cold all the more.
Oh dear, and this is going to last until Friday.
Oh well, this has been a bad year, so it’s only fitting that it has a bad ending.
I can’t wait for the New Year to start.
