While I’m in favor of gun control, the name of this group bothers the heck out of me. It's nothing short of discrimination.
Moms demand action? What about dads, wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles? In short, why not call the group People Demand Action?
The name implies that only moms care for gun control. That only moms suffer when a family member gets hurt or killed by a gun. I’m sure that dads and other family members feel the same.
Equally annoying is the name M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunken Driving). Does that imply that fathers and other family members are less concerned about the alcohol consumption of drivers? They could have just as easily called the organization P.A.D.D. (People Against Drunken Driving).
What also bothers me about M.A.D.D. is that they only urge alcohol consumers not to drive drunk. So what are they saying? That it’s okay to get drunk and then go home to abuse spouses, children and pets? That it’s all good as long as the drunk doesn’t drive? Why can’t they take a stand against alcohol in general?
And if they want to protest against drunk driving, why not introduce labels with pictures on all forms of alcohol. They could take their inspiration from the labels and pictures on cigarette packets.
Pictures showing mangled car wrecks, with bloodied victims. Paramedics tending to drivers, passengers and innocent pedestrians who got mowed down. Blood dripping from cars. In short, gory pictures that show the ugly truth. That would drive the message home, not their lame commercial of placing one beer glass in front of another and stating that you vision gets blurry.
As for gun control … as long as people feel in danger, they will feel the need to arm themselves and no amount of protesting will change that.
